With the new year brings a lot of thoughts of what went right during the previous year and where the mark was missed. In our general assessment of where we have been and where we would like to go, many of us decide to set resolutions as we ring in a new year. We may want to create different habits and behaviors; take action rather remain inactive. But, is it effective for you to set a resolution or to go with setting intentions in an effort to maximize change.

What is a resolution?

A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something. It is a choice that we make to bring about change; a control that we exact over our actions, behaviors and thoughts. This is a way of thinking rather than an action plan; a way to do something. A resolution is goal based in nature: “I want to lose 10 pounds,” “I want to stop smoking.” These are some great goals, but they are rooted in the future, making them abstract and far away. They do not provide a plan of action and can be seen as inflexible. This can be frustrating and intimidating, resulting in the goal not being accomplished.

What are intentions?

An intention means an aim that guides action. Simply put, intentions should guide action that then leads to an eventual goal or outcome. With a set plan and structure, there is a sense of responsibility and added determination to see “it” through. They are motivational tools that assist in the development of day-to-day habits; informing the here and now rather than being future focused. With intentions, you can succeed daily. If we look at one of the former resolutions to lose weight, the underlying intention could be simply to move more daily.

Now that the differences between resolutions and intentions have been understood, you can move away from one goal and set an intention that grounds you in the here and now. This allows you a specific starting point; a smaller piece rather than looking at the entire picture which are what resolutions are. Your intentions should give you the ability to celebrate the actions you are taking and before you know it, that resolution can be met.
