Taking Control of Therapy: Making the Most of Your Journey

Starting therapy is a courageous and empowering step—but to truly benefit from it, it’s important to take an active role in the process. Therapy works best when you treat it as a partnership, one where you’re engaged, intentional, and in control. Here’s how to make the most of your therapy experience.

Commit to Weekly Sessions—Especially at First

Consistency is key. Attending weekly sessions—especially in the beginning—helps build trust, momentum, and emotional insight. Life gets busy, but prioritizing your therapy sends a powerful message to yourself: my mental health matters.

Regular attendance gives you and your therapist a better chance to spot patterns, work through issues as they come up, and build a strong therapeutic relationship.

Find the Right Fit—And Know We’re Here to Help

A strong connection with your therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. Sometimes it takes a few sessions to settle in, but if after 3 to 5 sessions you don’t feel like it’s the right match, that’s okay.

Don’t give up on therapy—just reach out. We have many skilled therapists on our team, each with different styles and specialties. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, our admin team is here to help you reconnect with someone who might be a better match for your needs and personality. Therapy should feel supportive, safe, and productive—and we’re committed to helping you find the right person.

Speak Up—This Is Your Time

Therapy is your space. You’re encouraged to take the lead, voice your needs, and bring up what’s most important to you. If something doesn’t feel helpful, or you want to shift direction, speak up—your therapist wants to hear it.

Taking ownership of your sessions helps make the process more impactful and aligned with your goals.

Plan Ahead for Sessions

You don’t need to come with a checklist, but even a few minutes of reflection before each session can help. Think about what’s been on your mind, what you’ve been feeling, or what you’d like to explore. Intentionality leads to clarity and growth.

Prioritize Your Healing

Your mental health is worth investing in. By showing up consistently, finding the right therapist, and taking an active role in the process, you’re claiming ownership of your journey—and that’s where real change begins.
