Frequently Asked Questions About UMR Therapy in NJ
Do I need a referral from a primary care doctor to see a UMR therapist?
In most cases, no. Outpatient mental and behavioral health services under UMR plans generally feature “direct access,” meaning you do not need to obtain a referral from your primary care physician before scheduling an appointment with one of our in-network therapists.
How does UMR connect with the UnitedHealthcare network?
UMR is an independent subsidiary and the Third-Party Administrator (TPA) arm of UnitedHealthcare. While UMR manages your company’s specific employer-sponsored plan and handles your customer service, they utilize the nationwide UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network for medical and behavioral health providers. Because Main Street Counseling’s licensed therapists are in-network with UnitedHealthcare, we are typically able to accept plans administered by UMR.
Are both therapy and psychiatric medication management covered under UMR at your practice?
While our practice offers integrated care, only our licensed psychotherapists (LCSWs and LPCs) are in-network with UMR. Our psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are not currently in-network with the UMR/UnitedHealthcare network. If you require psychiatric evaluations or medication management, you are welcome to see our APNs utilizing out-of-network benefits or self-pay rates, or we can assist you in finding an in-network psychiatric resource.
Does UMR cover online therapy (telehealth) in New Jersey?
Yes, the majority of employer plans administered by UMR cover telehealth services for therapy exactly the same way they cover in-person office visits. Our practice uses a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, allowing you to attend appointments from the comfort of your home using your in-network UMR behavioral health benefits.
