TCNJ Student & Parent FAQs
Do you share my records or treatment information with TCNJ University?
Your care with Main Street Counseling remains entirely confidential and independent of the university system. No one at TCNJ—including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Health Services, professors, or deans—will ever know you are receiving therapy or psychiatry unless you explicitly sign a written release form authorizing us to share information.
Can I use my family’s health insurance plan to cover my sessions?
Yes. Most undergraduate and graduate students remain covered under their parents’ employer-sponsored premium health insurance plans. We are fully in-network with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare, which drastically minimizes your out-of-pocket costs compared to out-of-network private practices. We also accept out-of-network benefits and private pay.
How does this complement TCNJ’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)?
While TCNJ CAPS provides exceptional on-campus mental health support, they operate on a short-term, brief therapy model designed for immediate, situational needs. If you need long-term therapy, continuous weekly support, specialized EMDR trauma therapy, or ongoing psychiatric medication management, CAPS will typically refer you to an off-campus provider. We bridge that gap by providing consistent, long-term care without strict session limits.
Can you help me secure official academic accommodations?
Yes. High-achieving students struggling with executive dysfunction or undiagnosed learning styles often require structural help. Our clinical team offers comprehensive adult ADHD evaluations and mental health documentation. This paperwork can be used to support your application for official classroom or testing accommodations (such as extended testing time or private testing environments) through the TCNJ Accessibility Resource Center (ARC).
I don’t have a car on campus. How can I attend sessions?
Secure Virtual Telehealth: You can skip the commute entirely. We provide a secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual platform. You can log into your sessions from the privacy of your dorm room, an apartment, or a reserved private study space on campus.
Nearby Physical Office: If you need a physical escape from the campus bubble, our Pennington office is located just a quick 10-minute drive away in the historic Straube Center. It features dedicated parking and fully wheelchair-accessible entries.
How do I get matched with the right counselor?
Getting started is simple. You can fill out our brief online intake request form or speak directly with our local coordinator at 609-534-0296. We will look at your specific goals—whether that is managing severe academic anxiety, processing trauma, or navigating relationship transitions—and match you with a provider who fits your schedule, clinical needs, and insurance network.
